One down...

Thank you for the prayers. Day 1 is over, and it was survivable.

One more to go.

Bar Redux

It.starts.tomorrow. EEK!

Kim came over today to watch Little Missy while Meg and I studied. It was so hard to hand her over when she was all smiley and happy, but that's the time I needed help. Because I get totally distracted. It was awesome to see her lovin' on our baby girl! And it was a huge blessing. Thanks Kim!!

For those of you who have been asking what the bar exam consists of, let me explain the MA exam (while I take a break and get things ready to register our new car - more on that later).

Tomorrow, Day #1, consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (100 before lunch and 100 after, 3 hours each session). These questions are the same for everyone in the country and cover six multistate topics: Criminal Law, Contracts, Torts, Property, Evidence, and Constitutional Law. I will probably rock the heck out of Property and Constitutional Law and die in Evidence.

Thursday, Day #2, consists of 10 MA-specific essay questions (5 before lunch and 5 after, 3 hours each session). These questions cover all of the multistate topics as well as Domestic Relations, Wills, Trusts, Civil Procedure (yuck), Agency, Partnership, Corporations, Consumer Protection (Chapter 93A), Professional Responsibility (READ: MPRE!!), Secured Transactions, and Commercial Paper. Due to the sheer volume of stuff I needed to know, I did not study either of the last two subjects. They are the least frequently tested, but last summer each had its own question. Hopefully that was not a dumb choice.

So, it's going to be a marathon. Actually, truthfully, it's already been a marathon. The next two days are the sprint at the end.

Please pray for me. Here are some specific things you can pray for: (1) SLEEP; (2) peace; (3) confidence; (4) easy recall; and (5) cooperation from the most cow-like parts of me. (incidentally, the Board of Bar Examiners is allowing me to take my pump, in a gallon-sized clear plastic bag like everything else, and has reserved a room for all of the nursing mothers to use during lunch. Sweeet.)

I will survive. See you on the flip side.

She is SO her daddy's girl

Finally scanned a couple of pictures of Bryan as a baby. When he showed me this one, I actually gasped. I thought I was looking at my child. Crazy. She looks so much like him. I still think she has my chin, and my ears... but other than that, she's all Dad. CUTE! :)

Three more days. EEK!

Studied with Meg for 9 hours today. My brain is full - I'm pretty sure there are excuses to enforcement of contracts and exceptions to hearsay coming out my ears but I'm too tired to run to the mirror to check.

But I did get some baby time today while Bryan ran to the church to make sure it didn't flood in the rain (Meg snapped some pics while I got smiles from Eden):

And tonight Nino decided to show Eden how easy and stress-free tummy time is:

Cuteness, and quick Eden update

OK first the cuteness in still:

Then the update:

I never posted about Eden's one-month checkup on the 15th, but the general consensus is that she's a very healthy girl. She weighed 10lbs 6oz, so she's gaining quite well. Those chubby cheeks are tipping the scales! :) And overall she's quite healthy, but she's got a gas problem (so we've started giving her Mylicon after every feeding, and it's helped tremendously). She also has a very mild case of torticollis, which is apparently very common and easily treatable. It is a tight neck muscle that makes her always want to turn her head to the right. So we started physical therapy yesterday. The PT was very nice, and it looks like treatment shouldn't be a huge problem - it's mostly just thinking about how we do everyday things. Basically we just have to get her to turn her head to the left a whole lot, and avoid her lying down so her head doesn't end up shaped funny.

Also on her one-month birthday was when we got the first real smile. And now, you get one too, because I captured it on video today:

OK, that's it. I've got to go learn more evidence and torts. Seven days from now my only job will be Eden's Mommy. I CAN'T WAIT! :)

7 Days Till the Bar Exam

Random thoughts, because my brain is officially fried.

1. Eden is amazing. Smiley and beautiful, starting to "talk" to us.

2. Apparently I forgot everything about criminal law, which I studied before graduation.

3. Apparently I have an amazing memory for constitutional law, which I feel really shaky about. But it's my best subject... ?

4. Evidence is hard.

5. I am probably going to fail the essay portion of this exam. I haven't even glanced at my flash cards for that part since I made them. What? Wills? Huh?

6. I am getting some accommodation from the Board of Bar Examiners to allow me to pump at lunch during the exam, so I can sit through the second half without feeling like my breasts are going to fall off. Horray!

7. Thank God for our friends here, who have supplied dinners every other day since Eden was born, morning babysitting all week this week, and loads of support. We are so blessed - I can't imagine doing this without them!

8. I can get through this. (Right?)

I feel like a real person today!

This morning our friend Brandy (of labor and delivery fame) came by to watch Little Missy while Bryan was at VBS at church... and I went to Starbucks! And studied! Like a normal, non-mom-law-graduate studying for the bar exam! I was worried about how I'd react to being away from Eden for the first time. I was so swallowed up by the practice exam I barely noticed... except when a mom came in with her six month old baby girl and I got really distracted. But I still got through 1/4 of an exam... in one sitting... which was amazing!

Also today I had my first moment of trying to get a bottle pumped and trying to feed the baby at the same time. Baby on one side, Medieval Torture Device on the other. Awesome.

This is certainly my kid!

Just another quick break...

Here's me (sorry about the quality - it's a picture of a picture, and even the digital is six years old or something like that... I'm too lazy (and this break is far too short) to find the original and scan it...):

And here's Eden - if you get her looking just the right direction her chins come out with a vengeance! (there's a picture of me somewhere that shows off more of my chinnage - this is the best comparison I could make...) Look at those cheeks!!

Oh, and by the way, she now smiles. For real. It's the cutest thing I've ever seen:

Quick break from hiatus

To say CONGRATULATIONS John and Laura Kheir on their little Elisabeth! She was born yesterday morning, and weighed an astounding (but relatively unsurprising) 9.1 pounds! Mother and baby are both doing well! I haven't seen them yet but hopefully will have time to visit soon!! Here is the picture Mom sent out from the hospital:

Hitting the Wall

After yesterday's freakout breakdown, I am officially on hiatus from everything except breastfeeding and THE BAR. Until July 31. Please don't be offended if emails or phone calls go unanswered, blog posts go unread, or you don't get cuteness on here for a bit. Bear with me, I'll be back in full force in just over 2 weeks, when I have nothing else to do but love on my sweetness.

In the meantime, check out my adorable one-month-old baby girl.

(Dupy - I'm working on getting you a better pic. This was attempt #1...)

I promised pictures...

Baby Zek!!

Congratulations Mabus Family!!

Congratulations to our friends John & Elisa who just had their baby boy Ezekiel Patrick yesterday! He was 6 lb 5 oz, and 19.5" long. And apparently Brandy in the delivery room is great luck, because apparently after six or seven hours of labor, baby Zeke's trip down the canal was very short too... :)

Mom and baby are both looking great (Kel and I went to the hospital yesterday and I had my camera but I totally forgot to take a picture!! SO SORRY!!). Zeke looks a lot like his mom (chin dimple and all) and she's up and walking around (a mere eight hours after giving birth, and after laboring all night, no less). That woman amazes me!!

This is what the bar is doing to me

So... TMI here... but I have a clogged milk duct in my breast. That is not the crazy part (and the bar actually has nothing to do with that part). I could not, for the life of me, figure out who to call about said duct. I called my primary care doc's office, and they were confused too. Should I see him? Or should I go to OB?

OK here's the crazy part. My first thought was, "Seriously - who has jurisdiction over my breasts?"

July 31 can't come quickly enough.

On the bar...

The last two days of the month on my fridge calendar now have big block letters: BAR EXAM.

EEK.

Studying with Little Miss Distraction has been interesting. The last few days have been pretty productive though. I can get in at least an hour while she sleeps, between getting up to go to the bathroom, talk to Bryan, answer the phone, stare at her sleeping face, and eat/drink. Then she wakes up, and I feed her and burp her, and clean up her spit up. Bryan takes her and changes her, and usually plays with her for a little bit until she goes back to sleep. (Sometimes I can't resist and I steal the play time).

It's incredibly hard to tear myself away, but I know that in the end it's what is best for the whole family - I mean, we do need to eat, and I'm the one who'll be making sure that happens...

I've decided to focus on the multistate portion, because in MA you can get as many points as you want on one half of the exam or the other, and the multistate topics are some of the most often tested on the state-specific exam anyway. So I am getting a little more bang for my buck. I've gotten through a lot, but I'm still in the middle of learning torts (I am realizing that we actually did not learn anything in my torts class 1L year... I'm not kidding). But the good news is I have almost all of my flash cards made, so soon I'll be able to have Bryan (or whomever else so desires) quiz me. I learn well when I can "teach" someone who knows nothing about the topic. Bryan knows this about me all too well - he learned a lot of Shakespeare in college when I was memorizing stuff for Dr Pesta's class, and he's learned a bit about Indian Law, Environmental Law, Tax, and a bunch of other random stuff that I am sure that he does not care to know. :) But he's great.

Anyway, I'm back at torts... wish me luck. Actually, luck is not enough here. I am not at all kidding when I say the only way I can get through this exam is by divine intervention.

Success!

I fit into pre-pregnancy pants today. Buttoned. :)
